FAQ
Please see below for our most commonly asked questions:
Do I need prior Pilates experience?
No. Many of our clients begin with no previous Pilates experience, while others come to us with years of Pilates training. Our instructors work with a wide range of movement backgrounds and experience levels.
I already practice Pilates. Which class should I take?
Clients with previous Pilates experience are welcome in both private sessions and group reformer classes. We have classes labeled Intermediate/Advanced that may be the best fit for you. If you are unsure which class to take, we are happy to help guide you based on your experience, preferences, and goals.
How is Pilates on Main different from larger studios?
Pilates on Main emphasizes small class sizes (5 reformers), individualized instruction, thoughtful movement progressions, and a community-centered environment. Our instructors prioritize precision, alignment, mobility, and long-term movement quality rather than fast-paced, high-volume fitness trends.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing you can move in easily. Grip socks are recommended but not required for reformer classes.
Do I need to bring anything?
Grip socks and water are recommended. All equipment and props are provided. Water fountain is available at both locations.
How long is each session? What is your cancellation policy?
Each session and class is 55 minutes long. We have a 12 hour cancellaiton policy, after which you lose your session. This is due to the intimate nature of our studio.
Should I start with private sessions or classes?
Private sessions are always the best introduction for beginners, clients recovering from injury, or individuals seeking more personalized instruction. We do have many clients begin with group classes depending on their comfort level and prior movement experience.
Are classes beginner friendly?
Yes. Our instructors provide modifications and guidance to support a range of experience levels within class settings. We recommend classes labeled "Beginner" or "Mixed Level" for our beginner clients.
Is Pilates only for women?
No. Pilates supports strength, mobility, coordination, flexibility, and body awareness for individuals of all genders and movement backgrounds. Pilates is used by professional atheletes and everyday men and women alike.
Can Pilates help with injuries or chronic pain?
Pilates can support strength, mobility, alignment, and body awareness. Many clients come to Pilates to improve movement patterns and overall physical wellbeing. We recommend consulting your physician regarding specific injuries or medical concerns.
How many people are in class?
Reformer classes can be anywhere from 2 to 5 clients for optimized individualized attention and hands-on instruction throughout class. Our mat classes in Orange County have a capacity of 20 clients.
What if I feel intimidated or out of shape?
Our studio is designed to feel welcoming, grounded, and supportive. Pilates is a practice that meets individuals where they are rather than expecting clients to arrive at a certain fitness level.
How often should I practice Pilates?
Consistency matters more than intensity. Many clients begin with 1–3 sessions per week depending on their schedule, goals, and movement background. Joseph Pilates recommended an in-studio practie of 2-3 times per week.
Do you offer private training?
Yes. We offer private and duet/trio Pilates sessions tailored to individual goals, movement patterns, and experience levels. We also offer private classes of 4-5 people.
What is the difference between reformer Pilates and mat Pilates?
Reformer Pilates uses specialized spring-based equipment to provide both resistance and support. Mat Pilates focuses on bodyweight-based movement and foundational strength, coordination, and control. Both classes often use similar props such as balls, Pilates rings (magic cirlce), weights, therabands, etc.
How do I book my first session?
You can book directly through our online schedule or contact us if you would like guidance on where to begin.
Is there parking available?
In El Segundo, street parking is most efficient. We do have 3 tandem spots behind our back door, however we try to reserve those for our high need clients (injured, pregnant, etc).
In Orange County, we are located inside of The Academy of Dance. There is ample strip mall parking.
Do you offer memberships or class packages? When do they expire?
Yes. We offer class packages, and private session packages for both new and returning clients. Our packages don't expire.
Can classes be modified for injuries or limitations?
Yes. Our instructors regularly provide modifications and variations based on individual needs, injuries, mobility restrictions, and movement experience. However, private sessions are recommended for those with injuries. Often clients will take a few private sessions to learn how to modify for their specific injuries before joinging a group class.
What age groups do you work with?
We work with adults of varying ages and movement backgrounds. Depending on instructor availability and programming, select sessions for teens or specialized populations may also be available. For our clients under the age of 18, we require an adult to present during the session.
